Mickey and Don
Coach Mickey Olson My story begins in a town called Knapp, Wisconsin. I graduated from Menomonie High School-no swimming team. I graduated from River Falls State University which had just started a swimming program-not a pretty sight. It was a positive experience, one which I have continued in my professional career and it is a very big part of my personal life. My wife, Patti, and I have five sons; two are mine, Tory age 30, Erik age 27, and three are Patti's, Steven age 21, David age 19 and Mark age 16. We also have one daughter-in-law Michelle, and a grandson Rhett age 3. I have coached for 36 years and been quite successful, our record for the last 6 years is 82-5. I competed in the masters program for 10 years and made the top ten 17 different times for my age group. Four years ago Don and I decided that we wanted to get involved with the NCAA and Olympic swimming. We have been head timers with NCAA Womens Swimming and Diving Championships and last summer were selected to help with the Olympic Trials. We were in security, our main responsibility was in the drug testing and working with the media. Both were great experiences and we were able to meet some of the top people in the world of swimming.
This is just the beginning of our story-keep in touch as our story continues.
Coach Don Copas. Don is the younger of the two coaches (by one day), Don went to Lincoln Northeast High School, Lincoln, Nebraska. Don participated in football, swimming and track in high school. Ater high school Don went to the university of Nebraska where he played footbal for one year and lettered in swimming three years.
Coach Copas' has worked in four different high schools, 4 years-Lincoln Southeast, 3 years Sioux City Central, 8 years Sious City East High School, 20 years Sioux City North High School-The Metro Swim Team.
Some of Coach Copas' Accomplishments in Swimming are: 9 Individual State Champions, 6 individual runner ups, 1 team championship, 1 teamstate runner up, 12 team conference championships, 24 city championships, 4 high school All Americans, 3 high school honorable mention All Americans, 9 Academic All Americans.
Don and his wife Kay have a combined family of 7 children, and 2 grandchildren. Nearing the end of chis coaching career, Don wants to continus working with NCAA Swimming and Diving with his buddy Mickey. Both of us would like to help with the big show some day, THE OLYMPICS.

The picture at the right is Mickey during a swimming meet at River Falls State University-1964. If you look at the photo you will notice no goggles, nice suit, nice lane ropes and of course much thinner than today. I'm the one on the left-nice start, I think I took second in the race with a time of 2:06.0 in the 200 freestyle.
